Airflow iCON Extractor Fans: iCON 15 vs iCON 30 vs iCON 60 β€” Which Fan Do You Need?

The Airflow iCON range is one of the most popular and versatile extractor fan ranges available in the UK. With three sizes β€” the iCON 15, iCON 30, and iCON 60 β€” and a choice of standard (240V) or SELV (12V DC) motors, there’s an iCON fan to suit virtually every bathroom installation. This guide explains the differences between each model, helps you choose the right size for your space, and explains when you need a SELV fan.

The Airflow iCON Range at a Glance

All iCON fans share the same distinctive design language: a sleek, modern fascia, a unique iris shutter that closes automatically when the fan is off (preventing backdraughts and reducing noise), and a mixed flow motor for quiet, efficient extraction. What differs between models is the spigot size, airflow capacity, and available configurations.

Model Spigot Size Best For Versions Available
iCON 15 100mm Standard bathrooms & en-suites Basic 240V, SELV 12V DC
iCON 30 150mm Larger bathrooms & shower rooms Basic 240V, Low Energy SELV 12V DC
iCON 60 200mm+ Large rooms & light commercial Basic 240V

Airflow iCON 15 β€” The Standard Bathroom Fan

The iCON 15 is the most popular fan in the range and the go-to choice for standard UK bathrooms and en-suites. With a 100mm spigot, it fits the most common ducting size and is available in more configurations than any other iCON model.

iCON 15 Configurations

  • Fan Only β€” operates via your existing light switch wiring
  • Fan with Timer Module β€” overrun timer keeps the fan running after the light is switched off
  • Fan with Humidity & Timer Module β€” humidity sensor activates the fan automatically when moisture rises, plus overrun timer

Who Should Choose the iCON 15?

  • Standard bathrooms and en-suites (most common choice)
  • Installations where 100mm ducting is already in place
  • Where a timer or humidity sensor is required (available as built-in options)
  • Zone 1 installations β€” choose the SELV version (see below)

Airflow iCON 30 β€” For Larger Spaces

The iCON 30 steps up to a 150mm spigot and delivers significantly higher airflow than the iCON 15, making it the right choice for larger bathrooms, shower rooms, open-plan wet rooms, and utility rooms where greater extraction capacity is needed.

Who Should Choose the iCON 30?

  • Larger bathrooms, shower rooms, and wet rooms
  • Utility rooms and spaces with higher moisture loads
  • Installations where 150mm ducting is specified
  • Where maximum airflow is needed in a residential setting
  • Zone 1 installations β€” choose the SELV Low Energy version

Airflow iCON 60 β€” Maximum Extraction

The iCON 60 is the most powerful fan in the iCON range, designed for large rooms, open-plan spaces, and light commercial applications where maximum airflow is required. It shares the same sleek iCON aesthetic but delivers the highest extraction rate in the range.

Who Should Choose the iCON 60?

  • Large bathrooms, spa bathrooms, and open-plan wet rooms
  • Utility rooms, plant rooms, and light commercial spaces
  • Installations where the highest possible extraction rate is specified
  • Projects where the iCON 30 is not sufficient

Standard (240V) vs SELV (12V DC) β€” What’s the Difference?

This is one of the most important decisions when choosing an iCON fan, and it comes down to where in the bathroom the fan will be installed.

UK Bathroom Zones Explained

UK wiring regulations (BS 7671) divide bathrooms into zones based on their proximity to water:

  • Zone 0 β€” inside the bath or shower tray. No electrical equipment permitted.
  • Zone 1 β€” directly above the bath or shower, up to 2.25m from the floor. Only SELV (max 12V) equipment is permitted here.
  • Zone 2 β€” within 0.6m horizontally of the bath or shower edge, or above Zone 1 up to 3m. IPX4-rated equipment required.
  • Outside Zones β€” the rest of the bathroom. Standard 240V equipment is permitted.

Standard 240V Fans

Standard iCON fans operate at 240V AC mains voltage. They cannot be installed in Zone 1. They are suitable for wall or ceiling positions outside Zone 1 β€” which covers the vast majority of bathroom fan installations.

SELV 12V DC Fans

SELV stands for Separated Extra Low Voltage. SELV iCON fans operate at 12V DC and are safe for installation in all bathroom zones, including Zone 1 β€” directly above a bath or shower. They require a suitable SELV transformer (typically located outside the bathroom) and SELV-rated wiring.

⚠️ Important: If you are unsure which zone your fan will be installed in, always consult a qualified electrician before purchasing. Installing a 240V fan in Zone 1 is a wiring regulation violation.
