Traps are the U-shaped or bottle-shaped fittings that connect your basin, bath, or sink waste outlet to the drain pipe — retaining a water seal that prevents sewer gases and unpleasant odours from entering the room. We stock traps from McAlpine and Kartell in a range of styles for both concealed and exposed plumbing installations.
Types of Trap
- Bottle traps — compact, cylindrical design; ideal for wall-hung basins and vanity units where the trap will be visible; available in chrome, square, and round profiles
- P-traps — traditional U-bend that connects to a horizontal waste pipe in the wall; the most common trap type for basins
- S-traps — connects to a vertical waste pipe through the floor; used where the waste exits through the floor rather than the wall
- Bath traps — shallow, low-profile traps for baths with limited floor void; typically 19mm or 38mm seal depth
- Resealing / self-ventilating traps — designed to prevent the water seal being lost under syphonic conditions; eliminates the need for secondary ventilation
Water Seal Depths
- 19mm — shallow seal for baths with very limited floor void
- 50mm — standard seal depth for most basin and sink installations
- 75mm — deeper seal; used where anti-syphon protection is required

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a P-trap and a bottle trap?
A P-trap is a traditional U-bend that connects horizontally to a waste pipe in the wall — the most common trap for basins. A bottle trap achieves the same water seal in a more compact, cylindrical housing that hangs vertically beneath the basin. Bottle traps are popular for visible installations as they look neater and are available in decorative finishes like chrome and brushed brass.
What water seal depth do I need?
For most basin and sink installations, a 50mm water seal is standard and meets building regulations. A 75mm seal provides additional anti-syphon protection and is recommended where long or complex waste runs are involved. For baths with limited floor void, a shallow 19mm seal bath trap may be required.
